Reading Class Four

Read the first part of the legend about Robin Hood and choose the most appropriate names for its two chapters.

A. The Invaders

C. The Sheriff's Plan

B. The Sheriff

D. Bad Times

1) When Norman invaders came to England, they took the country with fire and sword. They took everything they wanted — cows, houses, land. They became rulers of England and rulers of common people, the Saxons. Everybody had to obey the Norman orders. The invaders were powerful and cruel and the Saxon people did not dare to fight against them.

Anyhow, there was one young man in the country who was not afraid of them. His nickname was Robin Hood. Nobody knows for sure why Robin became an outlaw. Some people say that he was the son of a poor farmer who quarrelled with Norman soldiers and had to live in Sherwood Forest. There is also another story which says that Robin's father was a noble lord. Norman soldiers killed the lord and took his land. So his son ran away to the wood and decided to take revenge for his father.

In the wood the young man gathered a band of followers who felt as revengeful as Robin Hood. He and his band of outlaws often attacked Norman soldiers; they attacked Norman travellers, took their riches and gave them to poor people who were hungry. Common people loved Robin Hood while the Normans hated the young man and were afraid of him.

2) Sherwood Forest was situated near the city of Nottingham. The sheriff of Nottingham hated Robin Hood. This terrible cunning man wanted to catch Robin and become a hero in the eyes of his Norman masters. But to catch the young man was not an easy thing to do. The sheriff did everything he could, but failed every time he sent an expedition against Robin. So once he thought of a new plan and hoped that it would work.

One evening, Robin Hood and his men were sitting round the fire in the wood enjoying their evening meal. Suddenly somebody appeared from behind the trees and came close to the fire. It was a young boy, the son of one of the outlaws who knew the secret way to Robin and his band. The boy brought an interesting piece of news. "Look at this," he said, "I found it on the door of a tavern." With these words he gave Robin a piece of parchment. It was the sheriff's announcement about an archery competition at the castle as he wanted to find the best archer in England and give him the prize of a silver arrow. Everybody knew that Robin Hood was the best archer ever. So the sheriff was sure that the young man would take part in the contest: for him it was very important.

an arrow

['ærǝo]

an archer ['a:tfə]

Robin's friends felt that the contest was a trap and began talking him out of entering it. Anyhow, clever Robin said, "I know it's a trap. But I want to go and win the sheriff's game." Marian, Robin's sweetheart, still thought it was too risky for Robin to appear in front of his enemy. Robin promised to her and to his other friends that everything would be fine as he had a cunning plan of his own. "You'll see that the contest will be a lot of fun," he said with a smile.
