1) The day of the archery contest was warm and sunny. A lot of people wanted to see it and came to the sheriff's castle to watch the great show. Among them there were common Saxons and armed Norman soldiers ready to fight. The sheriff was sitting on a high chair like a king with rich Normans and his soldiers standing around. A fine silver arrow lay at his hand on a low table.

"Remember that the man we want should not run away," he said to the captain, "I'm sure he is here, among the contestants." "Yes, my lord," answered the soldier, "I've told everybody to do what they can to catch him." The captain told the sheriff that two of his soldiers wanted to take part in the contest and got the sheriff said they could do so.

At the same time the sheriff was looking at the faces of the people in the crowd. Anyone could turn out to be his enemy Robin Hood, an outlaw and a trouble maker. The thing was that the sheriff had no idea what Robin looked like.

Before the contest began, the archers stood in one line in front of the sheriff to listen to the rules. There were about one hundred people altogether, young and old, nearly all of them were common Saxons, with the exception of two Norman soldiers. One of the contestants looked fairly suspicious to the sheriff. All his clothes were green and the hood of his tunic covered his face so that nobody could see it. "He can be our man," thought the sheriff, "I must watch him."

2) Then the contest began. The archers stepped forward, one by one, to take their shots. The sheriff and his men were watching them like hawks. The targets moved back further and further. Soon there were only five competitors left, and all five were very, very good. Two of them were the Norman soldiers. The other three were Saxons. Two of the Saxons were excellent archers, but the third was the best of the best. He was the mysterious hooded man.

The sheriff said something to the captain and soon a big group of Norman soldiers appeared near the castle. They stood behind the competitors ready to use their swords, but the sheriff gave them a signal to wait. The contest was coming to its end. The two Normans and the two Saxons took their last shots. They were very good, but not good enough to win as all the four shots were of the same standard. At last the mysterious man raised his bow. His arrow flew through the air and got into the very centre of the target. The hooded man was the winner of the contest! At that moment the sheriff gave a signal to the waiting soldiers and they grabbed the hooded man by his arms. The sheriff stood in front of the mysterious man. "I want to see your face, Robin Hood," he said and pulled back his hood. What he saw was a young face smiling at the sheriff. "I'm not Robin Hood," said the boy, "not the man you're looking for. I'm Will Scarlett."

Of course the sheriff didn't believe the young man. "Soldiers!" he said, "take him away. We'll hang him later."

"Not so fast there," said one of the Norman competitors suddenly, "he is telling you the truth. He isn't Robin Hood." With these words he took off his helmet. "I am Robin Hood," he said, "and now the time has come to finish the competition."
