Reading Class Six

Read the third part of the legend about Robin Hood once and choose the appropriate names for its two chapters.

1) Before the sheriff could say a word, Robin made a sign to the other Norman soldier who quickly pulled out a dagger and put it to the sheriff's throat. "Kill them!" yelled the sheriff to his men.

"Don't even think of it," said Robin Hood calmly, "my friend, Will Scarlett, will cut his throat if you don't put down your weapons. Just look around you." The captain and his soldiers looked around and saw a lot of figures on the castle walls. A number of outlaws from Robin's band were standing in the crowd, even more of them were coming out from behind the trees. The captain and his men had to drop their weapons when they saw that picture.

The captain said to the sheriff, "Some days ago we found two of our men in the wood. They were not wearing uniforms and they couldn't move because there were ropes on their arms and legs. Now I understand that these two people are not Normans, but Robin Hood's men who took their clothes." In fact it was all part of Robin's clever plan.

Robin Hood addressed the crowd around him. "The sheriff wanted to trap me," he said, "but look at him now — he's got in my trap himself!"

"Wait a minute," said the sheriff, "you can't be Robin Hood. You are lying. Everybody says that Robin is the best archer ever, but you've come poor second in the contest."

2) "All right," answered Robin Hood, "I'll have another shot and show you what I can do." With these words Robin took his bow and an arrow and aimed at the target where Will's arrow was sticking out of the centre. Robin's arrow flew through the air into the same spot at the very centre of the target and split Will's arrow. The people in the crowd shouted happily. "Where is my prize, the silver arrow, sheriff?" asked Robin, "I think it's mine now." Robin took the arrow and put it into his quiver. At this moment Marian, his sweetheart, appeared riding a tall horse and leading three more horses behind her. She looked very beautiful and smiled happily. "Now it's time to go home," said Robin Hood, "and I think you're coming with me."

Will got the sheriff on to one of the horses and tied his hands to the saddle. Soon the small group of riders left the castle with Robin leading the way. At the same time the other outlaws disappeared quietly behind the trees.

Soon the sheriff returned. He was wearing a sack instead of his fine clothes. He was riding the horse sitting backwards on its back and looked very funny.

Anyhow, Robin's fight against the Normans wasn't over yet: it was just beginning.
