Mother Teresa
The whole world remembers the name of Mother Teresa [təˈri:zə], whose life was very unusual. She was born in Albania but spent most of her life in India. Once said that she belonged to the world.
Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun1 who worked with poor, sick, lonely and dying people for 45 years. She founded an order2 which helped the poorest people. Now there are about 4,500 sisters working in 133 countries. Mother Teresa received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
Her real name was Agnes. At the age of 18 she left home, learned English and went to teach children in India. When Agnes was 21, she became a nun and chose the now worldfamous name of Teresa. Though the young girl enjoyed teaching schoolchildren, she decided to help poor people in Calcutta [kælˈkʌtə]. At that time there were hundreds of them in India, and many died from hunger and illness. Teresa started working with the poor in the most terrible parts of Calcutta and she collected money for them. Then people gave her the name of Mother Teresa. She offered food and medical help to those who needed it and went on teaching children. Soon she was joined by a group of young women who wanted to help the poorest together with her. That was how the order began.
Soon they opened the first Home for the Dying, a free hospice for the poor where they got medical help and love. Then they opened a home for children who had no parents and started working in some countries outside India. Sisters of her order went to the most dangerous places where people needed their help. Mother Teresa lived a fairly long life doing the duties of the head of her order practically until she died in 1997. She certainly belonged to those who change the world for the better.
1) Mother Teresa was not born in India.
2) The number of people in her order has grown.
3) Mother Teresa learned a foreign language in Ireland.
4) Mother Teresa didn't need any money contributions as she did everything with her own hands.

6) The members of her order worked in more than one or two countries.

Every Little Helps
(Story by a schoolgirl, age 12)
Once Vicki was coming back from her small country school. It was one of the last days of the term. The weather was so nice that the girl decided to take a longer way home, to the cottage where she lived. Her way lay through a small wood. Vicki was in shock to see that the wood looked terrible: there was rubbish everywhere — paper and plastic bags, boxes and bottles. Vicki ran all her way back home. She had to do something about it. Suddenly she had an idea. “We must clean up the place,” she thought. At home she phoned four of her schoolfriends. They all agreed to help her. It was hard work but soon they put all the rubbish into big bags and took it away. The little green wood looked beautiful again.
On the next day the girls came to the wood once more. They wanted to see the rubbish dumpers with their own eyes. In the wood there were some people finishing their picnic. There was a lot of rubbish on the ground around them. “What are you going to do with this rubbish?” asked the girls. “The place looks ugly. Don’t you think so?”
“The young lady is right,” said a woman with a hat on, “we can’t leave this rubbish here.” “That’s right,” said Vicki. “Here, take this bag.” “Thank you, girls,” they said. “You’ve helped us to understand that the country is a beautiful place and we must keep it clean.”
