THROUGH TIME: THE 1970s

1 Bauyrzhan, 49: I was a child in the 1970s. I remember that we had no central heating in our house, we had a stove that had to be heated with wood. If you didn't keep a fire burning in the stove at night, it was very cold in the morning. We had electrical appliances like a fridge and a radio, but we didn't have a microwave. Our toys were not as elaborate as today's toys. My brothers and I played outside all day after school. My sisters didn't have the beautiful dolls that many girls have nowadays, they played with baby dolls. It was a small plastic or rubber baby-like toys for which the girls sewed clothes themselves.

2 Almagul, 61: I lived in Almaty in the 1970s. The hippie style was fashionable then. My friends and I spent a lot of money on clothes. We wore wide trousers and bell-bottom jeans, brightly coloured shirts with big collars were very popular. Hair was usually long and a variety of accessories, coloured hairpins, panamas and headscarves were in trend. Large sunglasses and jewellery helped to express one's individuality, create a stylish and unique image.

3 Paul, 65 years old: I was a teenager in the 1970s. We had one small television in the house and it didn't have a remote control. We didn't use to watch television very often. We used to listen to the radio and we bought records or audio cassettes. I loved my cassette player! My favourite musician was David Bowie. Contacting my friends wasn't as easy as it is today. We had a telephone at home but we had to a telephone box if we were out. We didn't have mobile phones, computers, or the Internet.

4 Diane, 54 years old: Shopping was different in the 1970s. There weren't as many supermarkets or shopping centres so we would usually buy things in small shops or at the market. We certainly couldn't do our shopping online! We didn't have credit cards. Some shops would accept cheques, but we paid in cash for almost everything.
