Unusual Train Journeys in Wales

“We are going to start our journey in five minutes. First I'd like to tell you something about the Vale of Rheidol Railway.

It opened in 1902. The train company used the line to transport metal ore and wood from the mines and woods at Devil's Bridge to the sea at Aberystwyth. Today we are going to travel in the same carriages that passengers used in 1902.

The journey is 11¾ miles (about 19 km) and it's going to take about an hour each way. We are going to travel along the Cambrian coastline to Devil's Bridge. You must have your cameras ready because there are some spectacular sights. I wouldn't want you to miss them!”

“Hello everybody! I'd like to welcome you to the Snowdon Mountain Railway.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in England and Wales. It's 1085 metres. We are not going to walk up the mountain today. We're going to go all the way to the top in this train!

The train started running in 1896 and today we are going to travel along the same route as thousands of passengers before us.

We're going to start our journey here at the foot of the mountain. The whole trip (there and back) is going to take two and a half hours and you are going to have an opportunity to enjoy some incredible views. The train is going to cross a Roman viaduct and I'd like you to look out for the impressive waterfalls below it.
