Chol Paul Guet was only fourteen years old when he had to run from Sudan. Chol Paul had to walk one thousand two hundred and forty-two miles to Ethiopia to get to the Punyedo Refugee Camp. The rap has reprinted his story from a nineteen ninety-four issue of the Young Telegraph, a children's supplement of a UK newspaper.

Today I'm interviewing Chol Paul Guet on Skype.

Rachel: Hello, Mr. Guet. Thank you for giving this interview.

Paul: Hello, Rachel. Please call me Paul.

Rachel: Paul, we know how difficult it was for you and other refugees to get to Punyedo Refugee Camp, and we admire your courage. We know that you spent three years in Ethiopia. What was life like there in the refugee camp?

Paul: Camp life was different. Once a day, if not twice a day, we had food. Breakfast was bread and tea, and thousands of people lined up for food. I remember that outside of the camp there were these beautiful fields where I first saw giraffes.

Rachel: What was your best or worst memory of life in the refugee camp?

Paul: I can tell you both. The lineups for food were the worst. Once a week we were given potatoes. This was a special treat. There used to be fights over food. I hated that because I was so small, so I tried to get out of there, not to get hurt. At first, I felt bad about lining up for food like that. But now I think at least we had food. The best memory was when we found sponsors to come to Canada. It is every refugee's dream to start over in safety and security. I remember my friend coming to me to tell me we were going to Canada. That was the best memory.

Rachel: What were your first impressions when you came to Canada?

Paul: It was nineteen ninety-seven, and I was seventeen years old. We arrived in Halifax on October the sixteenth. I remember looking from the plane and seeing how strange the trees were and the colors were all different from Africa. And I thought, how do people live here in this cold?
