■ The Dinner Party
It all happened in India. At a large dinner party the guests (dis-cuss)1 a typical behaviour of people when they were in some crisis. One of the guests, an officer, said: “A woman’s reaction (differ)2 from a man’s behaviour. A typical woman’s reaction in any crisis is to scream. A man has much more nerve control, and that is what (count)3.”
One of the guests, an American naturalist, (not, join)4 in the argu-ment. He (watch)5 the other guests. Suddenly he (see)6 that the host-ess changed in the face and whispered something to a servant. Soon a bowl of milk (put)7 on the veranda just outside the open doors.
The American naturalist (under-stand)8 everything. In India, milk in a bowl (mean)9 only one thing. It is a bait for a snake. He realised that there must be a cobra under the table. His first impulse was (jump)10 back and warn the others. But he (know)11 that if you (frighten)12 the cobra, it (attack)13 somebody. He then spoke quickly, but loudly, “I want you (show)14 what control everyone (have)15. I will count 300 — that’s five minutes — and not one of you must (move)16. Those who move (pay)17 50 rupees. Ready? Go!” The twenty people (sit)18 like stone images while he (count)19. When he (say)20 “two hundred and eighty,” out of the corner of his eye, he (see)21 the cobra (crawl)22 for the bowl of milk. In a minute it was on the veranda. The American made a huge jump and (shut)23 the glass doors. The guests began screaming, when they realised what (happen)24.
After a few moments the host said: “You were right, Officer. A man just (show)25 us an example of perfect control.”
“Just a minute,” cried the American (turn)26 to his host-ess. “Mrs White, how you (know)27 there was a cobra in the room?” A little smile appeared on the woman’s face as she answered: “I knew it because it (crawl)28 across my foot.”
