Not long ago we started a new course at school with our social studies teacher and discovered that we, as young people, have official rights and they are established in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

For us as journalists, one of the most important rights is the right to express our views freely. But all young people should know that besides this right we have more than 40 other rights according to the UN Convention adopted in 1989.

Our reporters held interviews in different parts of Britain and the survey showed that thirty percent of teenagers didn’t know exactly what rights they had and about 60 percent of them had never heard of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. How could it happen?

We feel that every child should know these rights and it’s our responsibility to do something about it. Then teenagers will be more confident in themselves and will respect the rights of other people.

The list in the UN Convention is rather long and for a start we decided to create a shorter list of the top rights in our opinion.

Every child or young person:

• ... has the right to live (obvious but important!).
• ... has the right to choose their own religion.
• ... has the right to an education.
• ... has the right to be with their parents.
• ... has the right to be protected from abuse and neglect.
• ... has the right to express the views they have.
• ... to be listened to (for teachers’ attention).
• ... has the right to a decent standard of living.
• ... has the right to choose their friends and spend time with them.
• ... has the right to be protected from all forms of cruelty, exploitation and torture.

The government must protect children’s rights.

I think this could happen because the topic of children's rights is not discussed enough in schools or at home. Teenagers might think it's boring or doesn't apply to their everyday lives. Also, the original UN Convention document is probably very long and complicated, so most people wouldn't read it unless they had to for a class.
