Listen to five teenagers speaking about their experience of learning English and match the speakers with the statements. There is one extra statement.

Speaker One: During my sixth form, one of the subjects I studied and the one I probably enjoyed the most was the English language. Even having it at nine A.M. on a Monday morning could not put me off. Most of all I liked the original writing. Actually, it was not necessarily creative writing, but more along the lines of write an advert letter, newspaper article about. This was my favorite part of the course. In the exam we got a choice of four questions and had to do only one, which gave us a lot of freedom. This was hard to do at first, but our teacher had us practice a lot and it soon got easier.

Speaker Two: In the sixth form I specialized in literature and English. What I remember better from my English course at school is the stylistic analysis part, which was as following. We were given a text, which could be anything from a piece of poetry to an extract from a novel, and we had to look at the way language was used within it to create special effects. Again, this was hard in the beginning, but practice helped us to improve. I have always been fond of reading. I preferred modern writers. This course really helps me understand classical literature and enjoy it. Now I read classics when I have time.

Speaker Three: Before the sixth form at school, I had never thought that studying English can be so difficult and exciting at the same time. We studied a lot of different aspects of the language and its relationship with society and culture. It helped me to get ready to the language and society paper. This included three topics, but we had to answer only one. We studied all three in class, language learning of children, language change and sociolinguistics. Lots of accents and dialects. I can still remember a lot of this today, including the fact that there are eight ways through which new words can become part of the language.

Speaker Four: I have been interested in languages since I was in primary school. In the sixth grade, we had a lot of English lessons and some aspects of the course required a lot of hard work. Of course, we were also getting ready for our exams and did some practice tests. For me the most interesting part of the course was the language investigation. This made up most of the coursework for us and took the best part of six months. My investigation was on the mistakes native German speakers make when writing informal letters in English.

Speaker Five: Our English lessons at school were a lot of fun, but especially so in the sixth form. We learned not only through books, but through websites, television, radio programs, and more. What I particularly liked about English as a subject was that it was so interesting. Sometimes with subjects such as maths, it can be hard to see how it relates to real life, but language is used by all of us every day in some form or another. It's a fascinating subject, and I would recommend that anyone with an interest to study it.
