Some people believe that vocational colleges are for those school-leavers who can't get into university. In fact, students go to vocational colleges for different reasons.

A lot of people want to get some practical skills and working experience before they enter a university. They don't want to spend long hours studying theory and some abstract things, they prefer to learn a particular technique or get some experience in profession they choose. For such people a vocational college is a good choice for a start.

The other important thing about vocational education is that besides its practical character it is usually shorter than higher education programmes. In most cases such colleges offer two-year professional education and traditionally prepare students for non-academic careers.

In the past vocational education was often associated with lower social classes as it mainly focused on such professions as mechanic, plumber or welder. Recently the situation has changed due to changes in the economy. Now it requires higher professional skills and labour market has become more specialised. Vocational colleges are also changing and many of them offer programmes in such industries as information technology, tourism and retail, which are popular with students and are of high demand with the employers.

The system of vocational education varies from country to country. For example, in some states of the USA about 70 percent of vocational colleges are private career schools. In Australia some vocational colleges even offer Bachelor's degrees usually provided by universities in such fields as Information Technology or music.

Russian system of vocational education has long history and is one of the largest in the world. It is also changing with the changes in economy. Many colleges offer interesting programmes and provide quality training. As for entrance requirements, they depend on the level of education and the profession candidates choose. At the end of the course students get nationally recognised certificates as well as an opportunity to continue education at different universities.

Actually, today a vocational college can be a first step to high-paying jobs and successful careers in various industries. In fact, a lot of famous people studied in colleges before they rose to the tops of their fields. Can you name any of these people? Do you know their stories?
