What is technology? It's not so easy to define it, because everything around us seems to be a kind of technology. It could be anything from the invention of the fish hook to cloning sheep. Technology has always been a part of our lives and it inevitably affects the way we live.

Human lives and daily routines are constantly changing in the 21st century. Something new is being invented every day. But do all these inventions make our lives easier? In many cases when these things come into our lives, they are likely to create new problems rather than solve old ones.

They suggest the solutions to problems that actually don't exist. Moreover, these new technologies are expensive, take much of our time and make our lives unhealthy. For example, do we really need to buy a newer MP3 player when the old one (just a half year old!) is good enough? Or do we really need that new e-book when we could read a real book instead? Or do we even need to browse the Internet non-stop throughout the whole day instead of seeing the reality with our own eyes? This progression could go on forever. For every new technology, a new and better one is to always follow.

Without even realising it, our lifestyle has been affected daily by technology and its never-ending advances. While we have to spend days writing endless e-mails and surfing the net, we almost never stop to think about the inventors behind these devices. Even though the more technological devices are around in today's world, the more impact technology has on people's life.

It is interesting that the biggest advance of the Mesolithic Age was the fish hook. Yes, the fish hook — that little object that is attached to a fishing line and is cast out, as the person sits for hours and hours, waiting to catch a fish that will probably require all of their strength to take it out from the water.

An advance as enormous as the fish hook historically meant the survival of a whole community. Only later it became just a pastime to some people. Fishermen never think about the skill it took to create the fish hook or realise that it was the most important invention of a whole age.

Most of us don't even have any idea about the importance of fish hook. And we probably don't know anything about the genius behind technology. We turn on lamps in our flats countless times without ever really appreciating Thomas Edison's invention. And, sadly, talking on the telephone never reminds us to thank Alexander Graham Bell for this miracle of communication.
