So what else does Doctor Gardner say about being a genius? Are they born or made?

Well, he thinks they're made. Partly by their ambition, partly by their times, the time they're born, partly by luck, and partly by the stage their particular field of interest is at. This depends a lot on when they're born, of course.

Like Albert Einstein, for example?

Yes. Einstein came at exactly the right time when people were questioning the old laws of physics. He could see things in a new way, perhaps because of his particular intelligences. Apparently, he could think spatially as well as mathematically.

So he could picture things in his head, not just in numbers.

Yes, that was it, exactly.

Could you tell us a bit about what we ordinary people can learn from these extraordinary people?

Well, there are three things. For example, we all have things that go wrong in our lives. Sometimes we just give up or ignore them, but extraordinary people don't. What they do is, they say, well, what can I learn from this?

That's a very positive way of looking at life.

Right. And they also do a lot of reflecting. Things like thinking about what you're doing, taking walks, keeping journals, anything that allows you to have a distance from things.

And the third lesson is to work out what your strengths are and really push them.

And a lot of hard work, too.

Oh, yes. That's another thing about extraordinary people. They're not afraid to spend up to ten years mastering something, and then working for ten more years on a problem.
