Wildlife of the Amazon

The Amazon is the world's second longest and the wildest river of the world. It runs through the rainforest. In this tropical forest it rains a lot and the plants grow very thick. Thanks to these plants, people on different continents get much of the fresh air they need. This rainforest is not like any other place on earth. It is the largest and one of the oldest tropical territories on our planet and has thousands upon thousands of different plants and animals which nowadays are in danger and which people must save.

One in five of all the birds in the world live in the rainforests of the Amazon. A lot of them live nowhere else, for example, macaws of the parrot family. You can see hundreds, even thousands of them along the high banks of the Amazon River, where they look for food. Another unusual bird is the hummingbird. Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world: some kinds are only 5 cm long. They are so bright and colourful that when the first Europeans saw them, they called them 'flying gems'. Hummingbirds can fly up, down, sideways and even backwards. They can also fly short distances upside down.

More than 80 kinds of monkeys live in the Amazon rainforest. Scientists are sure that they haven't discovered all of them yet.

Maybe the symbol of the Amazon is the jaguar, the largest member of the cat family outside Asia and Africa. Though it's smaller than the tiger or the lion, it's a very strong cat. The Indians thought that the jaguar was a god.

Amazon anacondas are among the biggest snakes in the world. Some of them are up to 97.5 kilograms. They live on or near water and sometimes attack fishermen.

Among river animals there is the largest river dolphin called the boto by the local people. It can grow up to 2.5 metres. It sometimes looks bright pink because of the brown water. There is a myth which says that at night a boto becomes a young man so good-looking that all girls fall in love with him. In the morning he returns to the river and becomes a dolphin again.

The Amazon River is full of caimans, South American relatives of alligators. This meat eater comes from the family of dinosaurs, which walked the Earth nearly 150 million years ago.

The Amazon forest is endless and still hides its secrets from people. Scientists know that it is home for thousands of nameless animals and plants. They are nameless because nobody has seen or described them yet.
