Have you ever thought about what it is like to live on a space station 360 kilometres above planet Earth? Cosmonauts and astronauts say that living in microgravity is fun. It's like swimming in water, only you feel much lighter. But if you stay in microgravity for months, your muscles ['mʌslz] become softer and your bones become thinner. That's why astronauts must regularly do a lot of special exercises.

In microgravity they don't need a bed. They can even sleep flying in the middle of the room, but they don't do it because the room is not that big and they can easily touch computer controls in their sleep. So at night they use sleeping bags hanging from the walls. Sleeping in space is difficult at first because they don't know what to do with their floating¹ necks, arms and legs. But they agree that very soon it becomes comfortable and relaxing.

Space food needs to stay fresh for a long time. Nowadays space stations have fridges. They allow people in the space station to eat more or less common meals and their food may include² fruit, vegetables and even ice cream. Some food comes in special plastic bags, some is dry. It's important that space food is tasty and is getting better and better.

When meal time comes, all the residents of the station come to the table. To keep their meals from floating away they sometimes use a special kind of scotch. That allows them to eat with a spoon and a fork. The problems begin when some food or drink gets out of the container. Then it floats off and the station residents have to catch and swallow it before it gets on one of the computers.

Our health depends very much on personal hygiene ['haidzi:n]. The space station has no shower because water from a shower can fly in all directions. So the residents use wet towels³ and special shampoo to wash their hair. It doesn't need to be washed off with water. As you see, astronauts do everything possible to stay healthy and fit, to be able to do their everyday work, which is not at all easy.
