Episode Three. Sir Balin and the Sword

Cast: Narrator 1, Narrator 2, King Arthur, Damsel, Sir Balin, other knights.

Narrator 1. 1. In those days lords of different lands in Britain fought with each other. King Arthur wanted to stop wars and commanded that all lords and knights should meet at Camelot to have a meeting.

Narrator 2. 2. From every part of the country knights came to the town, so it was full of armed men. Among them there was a damsel. She said she had a message for King Arthur.

Narrator 1. 3. Arthur's men brought her before the great king. When she came close to Arthur, he saw that by her side she was wearing a sword.

Arthur. Damsel, why do you wear this sword? Women in my country don't usually do it.

Damsel. Oh, my lord, I would like to find a knight to whom I could give it. The sword is very heavy and I am tired of wearing it.

Narrator 2. 6. At that time there was a poor knight at King Arthur's court. His name was Balin. He stood far away and didn't take his turn because he was badly dressed. Balin thought that he could not compare with the other knights of the Round Table.

Narrator 1. 7. When he saw that the knights could not draw the sword, his heart began to beat fast and he decided to speak to the damsel.

Balin. Damsel, may I try to draw your sword? I know that I am poorly dressed, but my heart is as high as the hearts of the other knights.

Damsel. Sir, I don't want to put you to such trouble. So many knights failed to do it. I don't think that you will have success.

Balin. Fair damsel, it is not fine clothes that make good people.

Damsel. You are right. Do what you can.

Narrator 2. 8. Then Balin pulled the sword out of its scabbard easily and was very pleased with it.

Narrator 1. 9. That was how he triumphed over the other knights.

Damsel. In truth this is the best knight that I ever found.

Balin. I will keep this sword as long as I live.
