Oliver came onto the big road. Before, he ran behind bushes because he was afraid of being chased. Finally, he sat down to rest, and wondered for the first time where to go and where to live.

The sign said that it was 70 miles to London. London! A majestic, huge city. No-one could ever find him there! It was the perfect place for a homeless boy. He jumped to his feet and started walking again.

On the morning of the seventh day, Oliver, tired and hungry, slowly entered the town of Barnet. He sat down on the steps of some door.

Suddenly, he noticed a boy on the opposite side of the street staring at him attentively. Oliver raised his head and stared at the boy too. The boy crossed the street then.

He was about Oliver's age, very dirty, but he behaved like an adult. He was short, and his eyes were sharp and nasty. His hat barely stayed on his head, and he wore a coat that reached down to his heels.

'Hey, boy! What's the trouble?' said this strange young gentleman to Oliver.

'I'm very tired and hungry,' Oliver answered.

'Listen, you need food, and you will have it. Stand up!'

The young gentleman helped Oliver up, and took him to a nearby shop, where he bought some meat and bread. Oliver ate for a long time, as much as he could, while the strange boy watched him with the greatest attention.

'Are you going to London?' asked the boy after Oliver finally finished his meal.

'Yes'

'Have you got a flat?'

'No'

'Money?'

'No'

The strange boy whistled.

'You need to find a place to sleep tonight, don't you?'

'I'd like that very much,' Oliver answered.

'I have a friend in London, an honourable old gentleman, who will put up you for free if I introduce you to him.'

The unexpected offer was too good to refuse. In addition the old gentleman could find Oliver a good job soon.

This led to more friendly talk, Oliver found out that his friend's name was Jack Dawkins. Among his close friends, he was known as the Artful Dodger.

Oliver decided he would try to gain the old gentleman's favour quickly, and if Dodger remained the same, he would stop making contact with him.

The street was very narrow and dirty, and the air smelled disgusting. Oliver thought of running away, but they were already at the foot of the hill. The guide grabbed his hand, opened the door of a house, pulled him into the hall, and shut the door behind them.

Решение. №2 (с. 64)

Что бы вы сделали, если бы потерялись и были голодны?

Какие качества делают человека хорошим другом?

Ответ:

1. If I were lost and hungry, I would try to find a police officer or ask an adult for help. Maybe I would go to a shop or a cafe and explain my situation, just like Oliver told the other boy he was hungry. / Если бы я потерялся и был голоден, я бы попытался найти полицейского или попросил бы о помощи взрослого. Может быть, я бы зашел в магазин или кафе и объяснил свою ситуацию, так же как Оливер сказал другому мальчику, что он голоден.

2. I think a good friend is someone who is loyal, honest, and kind. A good friend should be someone you can trust and who helps you when you are in trouble. It's also important to have fun with them and share secrets. / Я думаю, хороший друг — это тот, кто верный, честный и добрый. Хороший друг должен быть тем, кому можно доверять и кто помогает, когда ты в беде. Также важно, чтобы с ним было весело и можно было делиться секретами.
