The walls and ceiling of the room were completely dark with age and dust. A very old man with red hair and a mean, hateful face were frying sausages in a pan over the oven. In front of it there was a table with a candle, tin cups, bread, butter, and a plate. At the table sat four or five boys. On a hanger nearby hung a lot of silk handkerchiefs.

'That's Fagin,' Jack Dawkins said, 'and this is my friend Oliver Twist!'

The old man smiled and gave Oliver a low bow. The young gentlemen surrounded Oliver and shook both his hands very strongly.

'We are very glad to meet you, Oliver, very glad,' said the old man. 'Are you looking at the handkerchiefs? There are a lot of them, aren't there? We're getting them ready for washing. That's all, Oliver, that's all. Ha-ha-ha!'

The next day Oliver woke up late. There was no one in the room except the old man. Oliver got up, and soon after he washed his face, Dodger returned with a lively young friend named Charley Bates.

'Well,' said the old man to the Dodger, 'I hope you have worked hard this morning, my dears?'

'Brilliantly,' the Dodger answered.

He gave Fagin two wallets. Charley Bates added four handkerchiefs.

After breakfast, the jolly old gentleman and the two boys began a strange and curious game. The old man walked around the room with a stick in his hand, and the boys followed closely behind him. At one point, the Dodger stepped on his foot while Charley Bates ran into him from the back. In a moment, they

'stole' Fagin's snuffbox, notebook, pocket watch, handkerchief, and even his glasses case.

If the old gentleman felt a hand in his pocket, he shouted out which pocket it was, and the game was started again.

'Follow their example, my dear,' Fagin said. 'Dodger will be a great man one day, and he'll make you great too!'

Oliver couldn't understand how stealing a handkerchief had anything to do with his chances of becoming a great man.

For many days Oliver did not leave the old man's room. He was impatient to get to work because he found out the severe temper of the old gentleman. If boys brought nothing, he sent them to bed without any dinner. Once, he even threw both of them down the stairs.

Finally, Oliver was allowed to go out to 'work' with his two mates. The three boys went out together.

Suddenly, the Dodger's behaviour changed very strangely. Oliver silently watched as the two boys quietly ran across the road and crept up behind an elderly gentleman standing at a bookstall. He was reading a book with such attention that he did not notice anything.

What was Oliver's horror and confusion when he saw that Dodger put his hand into the old gentleman's pocket, pulled out a handkerchief, passed it to Charley Bates, and they both rushed out and turned the corner. In a moment, the secret of handkerchiefs was known to the boy. He stood frozen for a second, then ran away.

Just then, the old gentleman looked round quickly. He concluded, of course, that it was the outlaw who had followed him.

'Get the thief! Get the thief!' the old man shouted, and a hundred voices echoed the cry. A crowd began chasing Oliver, growing larger at every corner.

Finally, he was caught! Oliver was lying covered with dirt and dust when an old gentleman was pushed into the circle.

'Yes,' said the gentleman, 'I'm afraid this is the boy!'

'It wasn't me, sir! It was two other boys!' Oliver cried.

'Well, they're not here,' said the policeman. 'Now we can only go to the judge!'
