A nation of languages

There are 1652 languages in India today. Most are dialects, but 30 are major languages. The official language is Hindi, but people use English for official matters. The Indian Constitution recognises 22 Indian languages, so they have a semi-official status.

Two Gandhis

Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of the Indian National Congress and a leading campaigner in the Indian independence movement. He inspired people to join his non-violent protests to make India independent from Britain and was sent to prison on several occasions. He was assassinated in 1948. His followers gave him the name of Mahatma (great soul).

Indira Gandhi was the second woman in the world to become a prime minister. She was the Prime Minister of India twice; from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until 1984 when her bodyguards assassinated her. She was not related to Mahatma Gandhi.

Curry and tea

The word curry comes from the South Indian word kari (sauce). Curry is a spicy dish; the hottest curries are called vindaloos and the mildest are kormas. Some of the ingredients of curries are chilli peppers, garlic and ginger. You can make curries with vegetables, meat or fish.

India is also famous for its tea. Around one million people work in the country's tea plantations. There are three main tea-growing regions and they each produce a different type of tea. The three regions are Darjeeling (north-east India), Assam (far north-east India) and Nilgiri (south India). Darjeeling tea is often called the champagne of teas.
