Scotland's inventors and inventions

Lots of inventions come from Scotland. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and revolutionised world-wide communication. In 1851, James Harrison invented a refrigeration system used in a ship to carry meat from Australia to England. Later, he developed his ideas into the fridges we use in our homes today. In 1892, the scientist James Dewar invented the thermos flask to keep liquids hot or cold. Kirkpatrick Macmillan invented and designed the first pedal bike in 1839 and, although it was very heavy and difficult to ride, Macmillan could cycle 14 miles in an hour.

The Orkney Islands

The Orkney Islands – or Orkney – are an archipelago of 70 islands off the north coast of Scotland, where the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea meet. Orkney has been inhabited for more than 5500 years and you can still see the sites of Neolithic tribes who lived there in the past. These days, about 20 000 people live on 20 islands. There are many festivals throughout the year, including the St Magnus Festival to celebrate midsummer. There are also agricultural shows, sporting events and craft fairs. The capital of Orkney is Kirkwall. It is a Viking town where around 8600 people live today. The town has a lot of original Norse architecture dating back to 1035.

Shetland knitwear

The Shetland Islands have their own variety of sheep, called Shetlands, which produce wool of different colours. Shetland knitwear is famous all over the world for its quality and style. It has been important in the economy of the Shetland Islands for more than 500 years. Some small companies still produce traditional hand-knitted clothing, but most people in the Shetland Islands use machines to knit.
