Belfast

Belfast became a city in 1888, but it has been the political and cultural centre of Northern Ireland for much longer. After the Industrial Revolution, Belfast became one of Europe's most important ship-building cities, and it had the biggest dry dock in the world. During the 18th and 19th centuries, architects built many bridges, buildings and streets in the city.

The Giant's Causeway

A causeway is an elevated road, sometimes across water. The Giant's Causeway is a basalt rock formation on the coast of Northern Ireland: hundreds of columns stand together forming the causeway. The columns formed 60 million years ago when a volcano erupted. In 1986, UNESCO named the Giant's Causeway a World Heritage Site because of its natural beauty and geological significance.

Music in Northern Ireland

For such a small country, Northern Ireland has produced lots of famous musicians. Van Morrison, born in Belfast, is one of the most successful singer-songwriters in the world. In the nineties, the Britpop group Ash became as popular as Oasis and Blur in the UK. Today's most popular group from Northern Ireland is Snow Patrol, whose album Eyes Open was the top selling UK album of the year in 2006. In July 2012, Snow Patrol performed in Hyde Park as part of the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
