A The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The book

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a children's fantasy novel. It was written by C. S. Lewis in 1950. The story is set in 1940, in an imaginary place called Narnia. The book is one of seven novels, called The Chronicles of Narnia. The plot is about four children who leave London to live in the English countryside during the war. One of the characters discovers a secret door in a wardrobe. This door leads to a magical kingdom – Narnia – with characters that include a witch and a lion.

The films

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is based on the book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Walt Disney Pictures made the film in 2005. The second film, Prince Caspian, was released in 2008. The third film – The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – in 2010.

B Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The book

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a children's book that Roald Dahl wrote in 1964. The main characters are Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka. Dahl wrote a sequel – Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator – in 1972. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was adapted twice into films.

In the book, Charlie and four other children win a tour of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. The other four winners are spoilt children and they each end up having terrible accidents. One falls into a chocolate river!

The films

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Mel Stuart, came out in 1971. The film starred Gene Wilder and was nominated for an Academy Award for best original music.

Tim Burton directed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was released in 2005 and starred Johnny Depp. It became a box office success and won an Academy Award nomination for best costume design in 2006.
