The Environmental Art of Andy Goldsworthy
The natural world has been a source of inspiration for artists across the ages. However, for one man, nature not only provides the inspiration, but also the materials for his work.
Andy Goldsworthy grew up in the British countryside, where he developed a deep love and respect for his surroundings. As he explores the world, Andy creates sculptures inspired by what he sees. However, Andy is no conventional kind of sculptor. He works solely with the materials that nature presents, such as stones, flowers, ice and even mud.
“I take the opportunities each day offers,” explains Andy. “If it is snowing, I work with snow; in autumn, it will be leaves; a blown over tree becomes a source of twigs and branches.” Using only his bare hands, Andy manipulates these materials to produce incredible works of art. These pieces, he believes, allow people to experience nature in new and exciting ways.
As they are an extension of the natural world, Andy's sculptures change and decay. Photography, however, allows Andy to immortalise his sculptures. He captures his pieces when they are at their most vibrant and exhibits them in art galleries. Occasionally, Andy also documents the gradual decay of his sculptures.
Andy has become one of the most famous environmental artists in the world. Environmental art is art which tries to capture the beauty of nature or raise ecological issues. Andy’s work achieves both: it showcases the natural world while also encouraging people to preserve it. As such, he is an inspiration for many environmental artists across the globe.
Andy's work is so in demand that he often receives commissions by private collectors who are willing to pay more than £300,000 for one of his works. Fortunately, many public art galleries have also invested in Andy's sculptures. These exhibits can be viewed in London, New York, Sydney and beyond!
If the idea of environmental art appeals to you, then why not try it yourself? Just take a stroll in any natural space and collect as many materials as you like. Build your sculpture in any way that pleases you and leave it for other people to enjoy. You can even take a photograph to remember it forever. It's fun and easy to do and, best of all, it won't cost you a single penny!
