Sid didn't like being alone. He was looking for love and he used every opportunity to escape from his home in order to find it. What is strange is that Sid isn't a person. He's actually an octopus.

Sid was living at the Portobello Aquarium in New Zealand when he decided to escape for the first time. One night, while everybody was sleeping, Sid opened the door of his tank and escaped. Somebody found him a few days later. He was trying to leave the aquarium through a door.

Over the following weeks, Sid made more daring escape attempts. He took advantage of the times when somebody was cleaning his tank to make his getaway.

Sid isn't the first octopus to escape from the Portobello Aquarium. Ten years ago, Harry, named for the escapologist Harry Houdini, got out of the same tank and climbed halfway up the center's staircase looking for the way out.

How do animals like octopuses escape from tanks? Well, according to experts, they are intelligent animals and their brains are bigger than other invertebrates, which explains their escape attempts. They are also quick to learn tricks, just like dogs. There are even cases of people teaching octopuses to open jars and play with Rubik's cubes.

So what happened to Sid in the end?

Workers eventually realized that the fifteen-month-old octopus was only lonely and wanted a mate. They agreed it was time to return their eight-legged friend to nature. So one of the employees carried Sid to the sea in a bucket.

On the way to the water, he made one last desperate attempt at escaping by lifting the lid of the bucket. Shortly after, he jumped into the sea and swam away to freedom.
