A. The Comanche Indians are a group of Native American Indians who call themselves Numinu, meaning “the people”. They originally lived in the Great Plains region and were nomads, hunters and fearsome warriors. They had a language and culture of their own and the tribes were organized in a democratic structure. Today, there are about 10,000 Comanche people.

B. The Comanche people were nomads. They never formed a single tribal unit but were organized into 8 to 12 autonomous subnations or groups, called “bands”. And each band had its own leader. They even fought each other. They say this made the Comanche governing system less organized than that of some other Native American tribes. Individuals could move easily from one band to another.

C. Comanches had a lot in common with other tribes of the Plains, yet they had some distinctive features of their own. For example, the Comanche warriors didn’t wear feathered caps like their neighbours. They preferred helmets made of buffalo heads, and no other tribe did that. Rather than ordinary moccasins, Comanche horsemen wore high riding boots which were usually coloured light blue.

D. When you think of the Comanche, you think of the horse. They were the first Native Americans to use and breed the horse so well. They understood better than any other Indians what a powerful new technology this creature represented. The Comanche travelled and fought on horseback. It was not unusual for a Comanche warrior to have 250 horses, for a chief to have as many as 1,500.

E. The Comanche attacked and robbed just about everyone around them and stole goods, horses and kid-napped children and women. They earned a reputation as frightening horse thieves. Their victims included Spanish and American settlers, who tried by all means to avoid meeting the Comanche. They were formidable opponents who developed strategies for fighting on horseback with traditional weapons.

F. War and fights were a main part of Comanche life. For two centuries the Spanish, then Mexican, and finally the American settlers were mostly powerless against them. Comanche attacks and raids traditionally took place at night. It was always during the full moon, when the Comanche could see to ride at night. So many raids were made by moonlight. In Texas a full bright spring or summer moon is still known as a Comanche moon.

G. As the Comanche travelled a lot, they had to make sure that their household goods and other possessions were light and unbreakable. They did not use pottery, which could be broken on long journeys. Their containers were made from leather. The Comanche preferred to make most of their tools, household goods, and weapons from buffalo horns and bones.
