The Story of Icarus
A. Daedalus ['di:dələs] had an idea. “Birds can fly in and out of the labyrinth,” he thought. “If I make wings for myself and Icarus ['ɪkərəs], we too can fly out of this prison.” So Daedalus got feathers and wax and made wings for himself and his son. Then, in the middle of the night, father and son flew silently up and out of the labyrinth. Like birds they flew through the dark night, away from the angry king in his dangerous island.
B. One dark night Daedalus killed Talus and fled from the city of Athens. He escaped to the island of Crete and worked for King Minos ['maɪnəs]. Minos told Daedalus to make a special prison for the Minotaur ['mɪnətɔ:], a dangerous monster, half-man and half-bull. So Daedalus built the famous labyrinth of Minos, and the Cretans kept their fierce monster inside it.
C. The sky began to grow light. “Be careful,” called Daedalus to Icarus. “Apollo, the sun, is waking up. Do not get near him. His breath is hot and it will melt your wings.” But Icarus did not hear his father. He saw the beautiful sun in the east and flew towards it. The heat melted the wax in his wings, and the feathers began to fall, one by one, to the water below. Icarus was afraid. He beat his thin wings faster. He tried to fly away from the sun’s hot breath, but it was too late. The last of the feathers dropped from his back. Like a stone he fell, down, down into the sea. The people of the world have never forgotten Icarus. His name lives on in the Icarian Sea, and men still try to fly like birds.
D. Once upon a time, in ancient Greece, there lived a wonderful craftsman, Daedalus. The people of Athens looked at his statues and said, “Daedalus makes statues like real people. They almost breathe and move. He is the cleverest craftsman in the whole world.” Daedalus taught many young pupils, and one of them Talus, had many good ideas. People began to say, “Talus is cleverer than his master.” Daedalus grew very jealous.
E. From the beginning of time to the present day people have wanted to fly. They could swim like fish in the sea, but they could not fly through the air like birds. Many people made wings and tried to fly. Some never got off the ground and up into the air. Others jumped from the tops of hills or houses and quickly fell to their death. But men have always hoped to become birds or birdmen. The first and most famous story of birdmen comes from ancient Greece.
F. Minos, King of Crete, did not want to lose his clever craftsman, so he threw Daedalus into his own prison, the labyrinth. And he put Daedalus’s young son Icarus in prison with his father. Daedalus had to find a way to escape. He knew all the paths of the labyrinth, but the fierce Minotaur guarded the way out. Daedalus sat and thought. Icarus was playing by his side. “Look,” cried Icarus suddenly. “Look at that pretty bird!” Daedalus raised his head, but the bird was afraid. It flew up into the sky and out of the labyrinth.
