We all know from an early age that we must “get a good education” and most of us associate it with school, college or university. And, of course, it's true as formal education and qualifications you get are very important. However, it's just one type of learning. There are many other opportunities to improve your knowledge and develop your skills.

The concept of lifelong learning first appeared in Denmark in 1971. Its main idea is that “It's never too soon or too late for learning”. Learning is not confined to childhood or the classroom. Instead, it takes place on an ongoing basis from our daily interactions with others and with the world around us. Throughout our life we can and should be open to new ideas, skills, behaviours and decisions. The proverb “You can't teach an old dog new tricks” is no longer relevant.

One of the reasons why the idea of lifelong learning has become so popular is the emergence of new technologies which change the way we receive and store information, communicate and collaborate with others. Constant change means that in order to survive and succeed today we have to adjust our knowledge and skills to meet new needs. This means that the most important thing we can learn is how to learn.

In general, learning is very beneficial: it makes us more self-confident, more adaptable to change, happier in personal life and it can be fun. Perhaps, you want to research the history of your family, or maybe you want to know more about the place you are planning to visit, or you may want to take a distance course in a subject of your interest. Today, the choice of learning opportunities is endless and it's never too late to start.
