25 Read the text and complete the statements after it.

Wales joined England at the end of the 13th century. The English King at that time was Edward I. The Welsh didn't have their independence, but they didn't want to have an English king. The Welsh people were ready to continue to fight. The legend says that they had no great leader then but they had many Welsh chiefs¹ who wanted to rule Wales. Three or four of them came to see Edward I and told him they did not want an English king but would like to have the Prince of Wales as a ruler. They wanted somebody who was born in Wales and of royal blood and spoke no English. They also wanted a prince whose life was good. "We want such a prince who hasn't done anything bad against any man," they said.

The legend continues that Edward agreed to these words and asked the chiefs to come back in a week's time and to hear the name of the future prince. A week later a lot of people came to the main square. They wanted to know the name of their future prince. The Welsh chiefs also came. At last Edward appeared on the balcony of the tower. Edward began to speak:

"Good people of Wales, you have asked for a prince to rule over you, and I have promised to give you a prince of royal blood. You also wish to have a prince born in Wales, don't you?"

"Yes, yes," the people answered.

"And you want somebody who cannot speak a word of English, is that so?"

"Yes."

"And you want a prince who did no wrong against any man in all his life. If I give you such a prince, do you promise to have him as a ruler?"

"We promise," said the people in the square.

"Here is your prince. It is my baby son, a prince of royal blood who was born in Wales a week ago. He cannot speak a word of English and he hasn't done anything wrong to any person."

The people in the crowd were pleased, but the chiefs were not. Alas, they could do nothing. Since that day the eldest son of the ruling king or queen of England has always been the Prince of Wales. The tradition has been kept until the present day.

In 1969 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made her eldest son Charles, Prince of Wales. Nowadays this title belongs to Prince William.
