1) It is common knowledge that British people are fond of sport. In fact, a lot of sports and games were invented in Britain. Football, golf, cricket and tennis are only some of them. Football is especially popular. It is played everywhere and watched by excited fans. There are a lot of football clubs all over the country. The clubs have coaches who train their teams. Football fans sometimes become uncontrollable, and then clubs are punished for their fans' unsporting behaviour. The teams play with each other and the best of them play in the Cup Final¹ at Wembley, London.

2) Wimbledon is the most famous lawn tennis competition, where athletes from all over the world take part. It is probably the oldest, too. The first tennis competition was played at Wimbledon, west London in 1877! Every tennis player dreams to go to Wimbledon and play on its grass courts. Wimbledon has its own traditions. For example, the players must wear all white and everybody eats strawberries² and cream.

3) A lot of people come to watch Henley Regatta — the boat race which takes place every year in spring on the River Thames near Henley. Rowers from Oxford and Cambridge universities compete with each other in this race. The tradition of holding Henley Regatta began in 1839. To become the winner of the race is a great honour³.

4) Another competition which goes back in history is Highland Games. They are held in Scottish towns and villages. Sportsmen compete in very unusual sports. One of them is called tossing the caber, which means throwing a log. The log is five metres long and weighs about 45 kilos. The sportsman holds the caber by one end and tries to throw it so that it falls on the other end away from the thrower. At Highland Games visitors can meet Scottish people, learn something about Scottish history, listen to Scottish music and enjoy Scottish food.

5) The tradition of playing cricket started in England as early as 1550. Cricket is a summer game played mostly by men and boys, though there are some women's teams as well. The most important competition is the Country Championship, in which cricket clubs play against one another during the season. Each match takes three or four days to complete.

6) Naturally, there are many more sports and games done and played in Great Britain. Both men and women play golf, enjoy horse-riding and watch horse races. Riding a bicycle or cycling is also very popular. And then, of course, there is athletics, grass hockey, swimming and others. Young people often prefer roller skating and skateboarding. Everybody chooses something to their taste.
