24 Read the text and say in a few sentences what it is about. Then complete the sentences (1–7) after it with the idioms from the text.

The English language has a lot of idioms which make it more colourful. Some people say there are about 25,000 idioms in English. They are very different: some are short; others are as long as a sentence. Idioms are widely used by native speakers, and that means English learners should do their best to understand idioms and use them correctly. The main problem students have with idioms is that it is often impossible to understand what an idiom means from the words in it. We also have to remember that idioms sound more emotional than their non-idiomatic equivalents. So they may tell you something about the feelings of the person who is using them. With their help you can understand if the speaker is angry, happy or excited.

We don't always know where an idiom comes from, but sometimes it is quite clear. For instance, the English language is full of idioms coming from sport. It is understandable as people living on the British Isles are a sport-loving nation, and sport plays an important part in their lives. You may be interested to look at some examples of such idioms.

To carry the ball means to control some piece of work and do everything possible to complete it. The idiom comes from such ball games as football or hockey and speaks of the fact that the sportsman who controls the ball is very important on the play field.

To drop the ball means to make a mistake, especially if you have done something silly or careless. That's what happens to a sportsman who loses the ball on the play field.

To be down and out comes from boxing; it means to have no money, no home and no job. The origin of the idiom is clear — in boxing if an athlete is down and out he is lying on the floor and can neither see nor hear anything as he is out of consciousness'.

To win hands down comes from horse-riding or possibly from some other sport or sports. It means to win easily, not even to try hard. If a horse rider puts their hands down, they relax and stop controlling the horse.

To win by a nose also comes from horse-riding. Its meaning is to win but with a lot of difficulty, only just. It happens in horse racing when only the nose of the winning horse comes ahead.

Saved by the bell means to be saved from some unpleasant or difficult situation. The idiom comes from boxing where they used to ring a bell at the end of each round.

To play dirty has the meaning of not behaving honestly, especially in a game.

As you see, the language people speak can tell a lot about them as a nation and as individuals.
