Computer Camp

Russian children have lots of fun at summer camps. We visited one last month and we had a great time.

Spotlight on Russia visits the International Children's Computer Centre.

The International Children's Computer Centre (ICCC) in Kukhmär in the Yaroslavl region is a world-famous camp for developing young people's computer skills. It started in 1986, and in 1988 it became a UNESCO associated school. Children come here from all over the world.

At the camp there are many activities such as horse riding and boating. Apart from the computer classes, there are classes in English, German and French, History, Art, Ethics, Ecology and even Zoology. There are plenty of sports to take part in too, such as badminton, hockey, football, skiing and tennis. Children can also take part in theatre and dance clubs, play in musical bands and go on excursions to the local town of Pereslavl-Zalessky.

The computer classes are for all levels of ability, from simple computer ABC's, such as using the Internet and sending emails, to computer algebra, digital sound editing, programming and advanced graphics.

All the children who go to the ICCC have a great time and make lots of new friends. Here is what some children said about their time there.

I think a holiday at a camp like ICCC is mostly fun, but with a bit of work. You learn new things like programming, which is like studying at school, but you also get to do fun activities like horse riding, playing football, and being in a band. From the pictures, I can add that the children at the camp seem very happy and actively participate in different activities. There are pictures of kids dancing, playing musical instruments together, studying in a classroom, and working on computers. This shows that the camp is not just about computers, but also about creativity, teamwork, and making friends.

If I were at the camp, I would choose computer programming classes because I want to learn how to create my own games. For sports, I would definitely pick hockey and boating. I would also love to join the theatre club because I enjoy acting.

Если бы я был(а) в лагере, я бы выбрал(а) занятия по компьютерному программированию, потому что хочу научиться создавать свои собственные игры. The best summer camp I have ever been to was a sports camp in the mountains. We played basketball and volleyball every day, and we also went hiking. The best part was the evening bonfire where we would roast marshmallows and tell stories. I met my best friend there, and we still keep in touch. It was an unforgettable summer!
