Listen to the interview with Will Smith, who is a well-known American actor and musician. Decide which facts in your workbook are true, false or not stated.

Reporter: Mr. Smith, you grew up in the seventies in Philadelphia. What was your neighborhood like?

Guest: There were people of many religions living together. I went to Catholic school.

Reporter: What was your experience growing up black in this neighborhood?

Guest: My school was ninety percent white, but ninety percent of the kids I played with were black. So I got the best of both worlds. I think it was there where my comedy abilities developed. In black neighborhoods, everybody appreciated comedy about real life. In the white community, fantasy was funnier. I started looking for the jokes that were equally funny for everyone.

Reporter: Your career is very unusual, isn't it?

Guest: Many people say that. In fact, I began as a rapper and only later started taking part in television sitcoms.

Reporter: Were there any musicians or actors in your family?

Guest: No, not any.

Reporter: Why did you choose music after leaving school, but didn't go to university?

Guest: Well, my first record came out while I was a senior student in high school. I had no wish of going to college or university. Music gave me money and I had some local success.

Reporter: Sorry, you said, Mom, I've got to tell you...

Guest: I told my parents I wanted to rap. They said, rap? My mother thought college was the only way. My father was not so sure. We agreed that I would take a year making music, and if it did not work out, I would go to college. That year, we won the first Grammy given to rap artists.

Reporter: How did your Mom react?

Guest: She was not absolutely happy, but at least she began to see my point of view.

Reporter: Have you ever thought about going back to college?

Guest: The things that have become most valuable for me were not the ones I learned in school.

Reporter: But there are some basic principles and education that need to be taught.

Guest: Of course there are. Reading, writing and arithmetic, for example, because we can't live without them in the country.

Reporter: So you don't see any reason to go back to a formal education yourself?

Guest: I know how to learn anything I want to learn. Give me the book, and I do not need anybody to stand up in front of the class.

Reporter: You mean, for example, they put physics in a book, but you know you could never be a physicist.

Guest: The first step is, you have to say that you can, and in the end, you'll be able to do it.
