Mountain climbing is one of the most dangerous sports ever. And one of the greatest ambitions of every mountain climber is to reach the top of Mount Everest.

One of them was George Mallory, an Englishman who probably was the first person to stand on the summit1 of Mount Everest.

When a small boy and a teenager, George "climbed everything that was possible to climb", as remembered his sister Avie. He made his first trip to the Swiss Alps at the age of 18, after which mountain climbing became a way of life with him.

Mallory got a good education at Winchester, one of the best public schools in the UK and at Cambridge University where he did history and literature. Later he became a teacher of English, History and French at Charterhouse School where he also introduced students to mountain climbing. In those years he met his will-be wife Ruth and they got married in 1914 only six days before Britain and Germany went to war. George Mallory became a soldier like many other young Britons. He saw blood and death every day and watched his friends die. Anyhow, Mallory was lucky to survive World War I, came home, and started teaching and climbing again.

As one of the best climbers in the country he was chosen for the first-ever expedition to Everest in 1921, and the next in 1922. His friends talked of him as an excellent climber and team member, though sometimes he was somewhat reckless. During the first expedition in 1921 Mallory and his team reached a record height of 7,910 metres. A year later they made it even higher, to 8,170 metres, this time very close to the top. The second climb was very hard: they climbed in the dark with candles in their hands. The team had no modern equipment or special clothes that mountain climbers wear nowadays.

In 1924 George Mallory was invited to climb Everest again. He agreed, although he knew very well how dangerous it was going to be. He also knew that he would miss his wife Ruth and their three children. Mallory promised Ruth that if he managed to reach the top of the mountain, he would leave her photo there.

On 8 June, 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvin, an Oxford student, left their high base camp at the height of 8,138 metres and began climbing towards the summit. The two climbers could be watched until they disappeared in the clouds not far from the mountain top. They never returned. The team waited for hours, then they went searching for them, but didn't succeed.

In 1999 there was an expedition organized to search for the climbers' bodies. Mallory's body was found and buried 75 years after he died. The search team checked his pockets and found his sunglasses, an altimeter, a pocket knife and some letters, but there was no picture of his wife. Could he have left it on the summit? If it was so, Mallory probably was the first man to stand on the top of Mount Everest.
