A Sightings of ghosts, aliens, UFOs, incidences of ESP or mind-reading etc are all instances of what are known as paranormal events. Many people, often scientists, are highly sceptical of all paranormal events and some have dedicated themselves to exposing the real reason for these events. It can be fraud and deliberately misleading people to make money. Some paranormal events can even be psychological tricks played by the mind.

B Harry Price took an interest in magic tricks and conjuring as a hobby in the 1920s. It was his talent as a conjurer that lead him to realise that many of the so-called mediums in London were in fact committing fraud and taking money off people under false pretences. He was one of the first ever paranormal investigators and became famous in Britain for proving that many people who claimed to have photographed ghosts or that they could talk with people who had passed away were really just criminals who knew some clever tricks.

C In the 1970s, Uri Geller became famous all over the world for his psychic abilities which included using his mind to bend metal spoons. Although he still has some fans to this day and had a long friendship with Michael Jackson, few people nowadays believe he has any psychic powers. There is no doubt that he is, in fact, simply a very good magician. There is nothing wrong in being a good magician unless you lie about it and act as if you have some kind of super power.

D Former magician James Randi is an investigator of paranormal events and has given many demonstrations on what tricks can be used to do things like pretend to bend metal spoons or forks with your mind. Uri Geller twice tried to sue Randi for libel but both times the case was thrown out of court and Geller had to pay Randi's court costs.

E The One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge is a prize offered by the James Randi Educational Foundation to anyone who can show that they have a paranormal ability under scientific testing conditions. Randi has asked a number of people who claim to have paranormal powers to accept his challenge. To date most famous mediums have refused to be tested by Randi and no one has got past the preliminary test level to show a genuine paranormal ability.

F The Amazing Meeting or TAM is an annual 4-day conference run by magicians, scientists and sceptics who give lectures on modern investigations of alleged paranormal activities or events. It gives ordinary members of the public the chance to meet with people whose work is to expose the fraud committed by those who claim to have paranormal powers such as ESP.

G There has been a lot of scientific research into the evidence for the existence of ESP, extrasensory perception, especially mind reading. The researchers usually use 4 cards each with its own symbol. The mind reading subject has to say which card the researcher has chosen. No results above the statistical figure for coincidence have shown any evidence that anyone has the power to read minds.

Look at the different locations before you listen and try to think of vocabulary connected with each location. For instance, words connected with a restaurant include reservation, kitchen, waiter, serve, side order and tip. Be careful, however: kitchen and serve are also words that can be used to talk about having a meal at home. In other words, beware of the extra option that is there to trick you.
