Exercise fifty-one.

Listen to the telephone conversation between Rachel and Steve once more. Complete the three questions the captain asked the astronauts in the performance.

Rachel: Hello.

Steve: Hi, Rachel. It's me, Steve.

Rachel: Oh, hi Steve.

Steve: I came round yesterday, but your brother said you were out.

Rachel: Yes, I went to the theater with my mum.

Steve: Was it interesting? Was it a classical play or a comedy?

Rachel: You won't believe it, but it was a detective story, written by a contemporary American writer.

Steve: A modern detective story on the stage. I can't imagine it.

Rachel: Yes, the performance really differs from the performances we are used to. The action takes place on board a spaceship, which is traveling through the galaxy. The seven members of the space crew get together in the captain's room. They were invited because somebody had changed the route of the spaceship. The captain, who was a policeman on the Earth, wants to find out the truth. He listens to the astronaut's versions of the story, and then starts to ask the audience in the theater different questions, like, what was Jane doing when Tim came in? Where was Tim standing when the mobile phone rang? Why was Jane crying when the men went out? And a lot of other questions.

Steve: He asked the audience, the people in the theater, didn't he?

Rachel: It was a smart decision by the producer to involve the audience. And did the people give any answers?

Steve: Yes, the people answered enthusiastically. I was surprised to find out that they remembered the facts and small details.

Rachel: Did the captain find the criminal?

Steve: No, it was not done that way. After the questions and answers, it became clear that any of the astronauts could have changed the route of the ship. So the captain asked the audience to vote. They had to applaud every astronaut on the stage. The loudest applause meant that astronaut had changed the route. Then we heard the astronaut's story.

Rachel: Interesting. The audience solves the criminal case. I can't say that's fair.

Steve: I agree with you. But it's just a performance. By the way, every evening, the audience chooses different astronauts.

Rachel: I think I should go and see this open-ended performance myself.

Steve: It's really worth seeing.

Rachel: But what did you want yesterday? Why did you come?

Steve: I need a book you promised to lend me. You said there's lots of information there, which I could use for my project.

Rachel: Oh, yes, sorry, I forgot. In an hour, I'm going to the fitness center. I can take the book with me and we can meet somewhere on the way there.

Steve: Good idea. Let's meet in the fitness center. I was planning to go to the swimming pool anyway. So I'll combine business with pleasure.

Rachel: Okay. See you in the fitness center then. I'll bring you the book.

Steve: Thanks. Bye.

Rachel: Bye.
