Martha: Oh yes, of course. Um well, you see, the thing is that my daughter spends all her time on the computer, on the internet, you know, in her room and well, we never see her anymore. She doesn't even eat with us, she eats sitting in front of the computer and I'm so worried that she...

Host: Excuse me, uh can I just say something? Um how old is your daughter?

Martha: She's seventeen.

Host: And do you know what she's doing when she's on the internet?

Martha: Um I'm not sure really. I mean, she says she's chatting to her friends but I never hear her speaking. She's just typing all the time. She's very good at typing, you know, very fast.

Host: That's very interesting, but your daughter isn't really talking to her friends.

Martha: Isn't she?

Host: No. She's writing messages to them on a chat site. Now.

Martha: I'm sorry. What do you mean by chat site?

Host: Well, a chat site is a virtual space on the internet where people can send instant messages to their friends and meet new people. It's a great way to communicate. For a start, it's a lot cheaper than the telephone, but there are some disadvantages. For example, people can lie about who they really are.
