E-books

1. Electronic books, or e-books, are described in the Oxford Dictionary of English as printed books in electronic form, but in fact e-books can be born digital, so they may not have a printed equivalent. E-books are usually read on e-book readers, personal computers and many mobile phones.

2. Early e-books were generally used by a limited audience interested in special subjects. However, nowadays e-books are becoming very popular with the general public. You can see more and more people reading e-books on public transport. Electronic textbooks are finding their way into classrooms and some libraries have begun giving out e-books to their readers. You can even buy e-books online.

3. The advantages of e-books are clear. They don't take as much space as printed books and your e-book collection won't take up a lot of room and weight. An e-book may be readable in low light or even in darkness. Many new e-book readers read the text aloud to you, which may be important to people who can't see well. Though an e-book reader is much more expensive than a paper book, the electronic texts are a lot cheaper. In fact, a great share of e-books online can be used free. The production of e-books doesn't need paper so they are more ecologically friendly.

4. At the same time using e-books may have some disadvantages. While printed books are readable for many years, e-books may need to be copied or adapted to new standards. Paper books can be bought for a present and some people may prefer to have a library of paper books at home because they like the look and feel of them. An author who publishes a book often puts more into the work than just the words on the pages. Books with large pictures, for example children's books, look much better on paper. A printed book will never turn off or lose the data, its shelf life is much longer than the life of an e-book reader. As with any piece of technology, the reader must be protected from cold and hot temperatures, water etc. What kind of books — printed or electronic — do you choose for yourself and why?

An e-book, or electronic book, is a book in electronic form that can be read on an e-book reader, computer, or mobile phone. Yes, I have used one. I often use my tablet to read books for school. I think the future belongs to them because they are very convenient. You can carry a whole library in one small device, they are often cheaper than printed books, and they are better for the environment because they don't use paper.

Электронная книга, или e-book, — это книга в электронной форме, которую можно читать на специальном устройстве для чтения, компьютере или мобильном телефоне. Да, я пользовался такой. Я часто использую свой планшет для чтения книг для школы. Я думаю, что за ними будущее, потому что они очень удобны. Можно носить целую библиотеку в одном маленьком устройстве, они часто дешевле печатных книг, и они лучше для окружающей среды, потому что для них не нужна бумага.

I choose electronic books for myself. I prefer them because I can store hundreds of books on my tablet, which is great because I don't have much space in my room. Also, e-books are often cheaper, and sometimes I can find them for free online, which is good for my pocket money. It's also really cool that I can read them in the dark without turning on a light.
