The Discovery of the Quedagh Merchant

In the tropical waters off the coast of the Dominican Republic lie the remains of an abandoned ship which was lost in the 17th century. The ship involved in this recent discovery is no ordinary one. This is the Quedagh Merchant, a ship once filled with treasure held by the legendary pirate Captain Kidd. "When I first looked down and saw it, I couldn't believe everybody missed it for 300 years!" exclaimed underwater archaeologist Charles Beeker, whose team discovered the wreck. What makes the find even more incredible is that nobody had taken anything from it at any point.

The discovery of the ship helps to complete the story of the infamous pirate William Kidd, who captured it in 1698. Kidd hadn't always been a pirate. In fact, the talented sailor made a name for himself as a pirate hunter working for the British government. During an expedition funded by the British, Kidd switched sides, attacking a merchant ship captained by an Englishman. That ship was the Quedagh Merchant.

After defeating the captain, Kidd took command of the ship and seized its cargo. The treasure that Kidd captured was worth £15,000 – equivalent to millions today! However, after sailing to the Caribbean, he realised that he would never get away with betraying the British authorities. Hoping to distance himself from his actions, he abandoned the ship and its cargo before sailing to his home in New York. However, upon his arrival, Kidd was arrested and sent back to London. There, he was put on trial and found guilty of piracy. He was executed on the banks of the River Thames.

Kidd told people that he had buried treasure in a secret location, which he never revealed. Treasure hunters have been looking for it ever since. The discovery of the Quedagh Merchant failed to solve the mystery – there was no treasure on board. Kidd's gold could well still be buried somewhere in the world.
