Beside the river on a hot day.
Speaker 1: This is fantastic. I'd stay here forever if we didn't have to go back to school.
Speaker 2: Yeah. I love being in the country with all the birds and the plants. Just look at all these trees.
Speaker 1: Listen to the river. It's like music. The water's so clean. If I had an empty bottle, I'd fill it and take it home to drink.
Speaker 2: Oh no, you wouldn't. Not if you'd noticed all that rubbish.
Speaker 1: Oh, look at that. That's awful. Who would do that? What a mess.
Speaker 2: Most of it is plastic too, which is a disaster for the environment.
Speaker 1: Look over there. Some bricks have been left there, just dumped.
Speaker 2: Isn't there a landfill site near here?
Speaker 1: There probably is, but you have to pay to use it.
Speaker 2: You have to pay to throw away your rubbish. That's crazy.
Speaker 1: We should pick up the rubbish. Look, I've got some bin bags here. Let's throw it away in town.
Speaker 2: Wait a moment. I'm going to take some photos. This is incredible. Why do people do this?
At school the next day.
Speaker 1: I'm going to do something about all that rubbish by the river. Are you going to help me?
Speaker 2: All right. What do you want to do?
Speaker 1: Well, if we could get enough people, we could hold a demonstration.
Speaker 2: That's ambitious. But it's a good idea. I think we should definitely do something.
Speaker 3: But a demonstration would be very difficult to organize. If you told everyone at school, how many people do you think would come? Where would you start?
Speaker 4: What would you do if the police came? Would our parents let us?
Speaker 1: Okay, let's think about this. What else can we do? If we don't do something now, the river will be ruined very soon.
Speaker 2: I know. Let's ask Mr. Beaumont after school. He'll have ideas. He probably did things like this when he was young.
At the end of the school day.
Speaker 2: Mr. Beaumont!
Speaker 5: Ben, Sam, Jill, Chris. These are serious faces. How can I help you?
Speaker 1: Well, we had a picnic by the river recently. It was so beautiful at first, but then we saw lots of rubbish everywhere. Yuck! Chris took some photos.
Speaker 4: Look, they're on my mobile. Here.
Speaker 5: Ah, yes, I can see what you mean. And I'm guessing you have a plan. Are you going to tell me about it?
Speaker 1: Well, Jill has an idea, but we think it's probably going to be too difficult.
Speaker 5: What is it?
Speaker 1: To hold a demonstration.
Speaker 5: Yes, not easy. It's not impossible, but so we'd like to know what else we can do. Do you have any ideas?
Speaker 5: Uh, you want to do something simple but effective, to tell everybody about the situation and make them think, right?
Speaker 1: Exactly!
Speaker 5: Hmm. Well, how about an exhibition? Chris has already taken some photos. You can take more. But remember, you'll need to think of some solutions to the problem too.
Speaker 4: Okay. I'll take photos of recycling bins and things you can make out of rubbish.
Speaker 1: That's a good idea.
Speaker 6: How many people will come to an exhibition about rubbish?
Speaker 7: If we combine it with something else, I'm sure a lot of people will come. But what can we combine it with? What are people interested in? Music?
Speaker 4: I'm not singing in front of the whole town!
Speaker 1: I know! A play! Let's write and perform a play. Then people can walk through Chris's exhibition on their way to see the play.
Speaker 5: It could be a play about the importance of protecting our local environment, perhaps?
Speaker 1: Brilliant!
Speaker 4: Pen and paper? I've got some.
Speaker 1: Okay. Who are the characters going to be?
