Why family rows are good for you

Each of us has experienced hot arguments, slammed doors, raised voices and tears at one time or another. Most of us did our best to avoid such situations but was it really the right thing to do?

1 ...

There is a common belief that a serious row can draw people apart and alienate them. However, a recent study suggests that conflicts can strengthen relationships between parents and their children. Surprisingly, teenagers say that family rows help them understand their parents’ views better and bring them closer to each other. The rows also give teenagers the chance to articulate their opinions and show that they are no longer little girls and boys. Scientists say that what should be worrying is the families who never say a cross word to each other. It may be a sign of unwilling to talk or even not bothering to do so.

2 ...

There are lots of examples of difficult parent — child relationships. Take the reality TV show The Osbournes [CG], for example. Daughter Kelly has frequent heated rows with her mother Sharon but their bond is very close and they always make up. There are quite a few other similar situations. The famous violinist Vanessa Mae [CG] used to employ her mum as a manager but after a while she sacked her for being “too competitive”. And a row between Sophie Dahl [CG] and her mother Tessa resulted in her being spotted by a model scout after wandering around the streets sobbing.

3 ...

Psychologists say that not only children learn a lot from family rows but parents as well. They are forced to get to know their children afresh, with their own opinions and thoughts. They learn how to develop the new adult relationships with their children. Researchers add that the main benefit of heated rows is reaching a conclusion and finding a way out of a problem. If you avoid rows at any cost, you keep your feelings to yourself and it’s not healthy.

4 ...

Although the psychologists are certain that rows are good for us, there are still lots of people who find conflicts too upsetting and destructive. They really need to let their hidden feelings out. There is always a remedy at hand for them. Switch on a TV and you won’t have to wait for long before the characters of a soap opera start a blazing row exchanging heated words to the delight of the viewers. Psychologists say soaps are very good for those who avoid rows in real life.
