1 More than 80 years ago, a geochemist Vladimir Vernadsky came up with an extraordinary theory of how the Earth developed. He believed that people were a geological force shaping the future of the planet just like volcanic eruptions and earthquakes had shaped its past. He developed the concept of “noosphere”, the sphere of human thought, and claimed that the Earth would be a planet of the mind, ruled by reason and science.

2 Nowadays, many scientists agree with these ideas and say that some of them have already come true. People have considerably altered the atmosphere and have had a huge impact on ecosystems of the planet. It would be interesting to learn whether the rest of his ideas will prove correct.

3 People have realised to what extent the environment was damaged in the last century. Now they have powerful computers and satellites which help balance the economic development with the environmental issues. Sustainable development can bring many benefits in the short and long term.

4 “We’ve come through a period of finally understanding the nature and effect of humanity’s transformation of the Earth,” said William Clark, a biologist at Harvard University. “Having realised it, can we become clever enough to be able to maintain the rates of progress?” he asked. “I think we can.”

5 Many scientists don’t believe that it is possible to understand our planet well enough to learn how to rule it. But others are doing their best to organise summits and conferences discussing sustainable development, which attract world leaders and thousands of other participants. All countries have to make important choices which will influence the quality of people’s life in the future.

6 We can no longer separate humans from nature because our activity has a huge impact on the planet’s ecosystems. It doesn’t matter whether the emission of carbon dioxide happens from a Korean power plant or an Indian taxicab, it adds to global warming. People who want to buy cheap picture frames in Japan make other people in Indonesia cut down trees in forests.

7 Experts say that people’s inventiveness that drives human development can be used to soften their impact on the environment.
