Kathy

I love books – especially thrillers or science fiction. When I was small I read all the time. But I don’t only like to read – I love to write, too. I write short stories for our school magazine, but now, I also write screenplays for Magic Lantern – that’s what we call our film company. My scripts are about the problems or funny things that happen to young people. I really get a kick out of seeing my words brought to life by the rest of the team. Sometimes I can’t believe they’re my stories, but they are!

A few years ago, my grandpa gave me his old cine camera. I loved to play around with it and every weekend I shot stupid films of my family. They weren’t very good, but it was fun. Then last year my mum bought me a digital video camera for my birthday. It’s not the best camera, but it’s good enough for us. To be honest, I believe you can make a great movie with just a mobile phone. Imagination and talent are more important than expensive gear. Magic Lantern’s films aren’t very long – only ten minutes each – but they don’t look amateur. They’re quite professional! I usually direct the movies, because I’m always behind the camera. I’m also quite a bossy guy; I really want to be a film director when I finish school.

How do you and your friends spend your leisure time? Have you ever thought about film-making as a hobby? We spoke to a group of friends who do just that for their pastime! These days you don’t need a million-dollar studio to make a movie.

Kim

I’ve had roles in school plays since I was in the first year of high school. Shawn saw me in a school show and thought I was wonderful. He asked me to join Magic Lantern, and I’m so happy he did. I meet three evenings a week with the other actors, Ashley and Rick, and we rehearse our parts. Then we meet Shawn and Kathy at the weekends for the filming. I enjoy playing comedy parts most of all because I’m a bit of a clown.

Callum

Outside school time, you can usually find me sitting in front of a computer. All my friends call me a geek, and I’m afraid it’s true. I’m mad about computers. But I’m also mad about the movies, so joining Magic Lantern makes perfect sense. Shawn is a great cameraman, but he doesn’t know how to edit his films with computer software. That’s what I do. I spend hours every weekend putting the scenes together and cutting out the bad bits. Then I do the most important job of all. I upload our movies onto the special website that I made for us.
