Patrick

When I was a boy, my dad had lots of old cameras and equipment at home. It was really the equipment that fascinated me. My dad taught me how to take cameras apart and how to fix them. My first photos were terrible. But when I was fifteen we went on holiday to Italy and, with my dad's help, I took some fantastic shots. When I showed them to my friends back home they were amazed. My dad suggested I make a career out of it, so that's what I did. There are many reasons why I love my job. For a start, it's an art form, and creating a powerful image is very satisfying. Also, I get to visit parts of the world that most people never see for themselves. It's risky, of course. I've dodged bullets on war assignments and I've come close to death on a few occasions. Perhaps the main reason why I like it, though, is because I can do a lot of good. My photographs of war or natural disasters help people understand how serious these situations are. That's important to me.

I never had an ambition to do this job when I was a girl. I was actually afraid of heights when I was small, and I was never brave enough to go on roller coasters or that kind of thing. But when I was fourteen I took my first helicopter flight, and I loved it – I was hooked! I had gone with a friend to an air show. There are lots of air shows in England during the summer. People come and watch aeroplanes flying. At the show we went to, you could pay for a short helicopter ride, so my friend and I decided to buy tickets. I'm so glad we did. It was fantastic. Even though I now fly every day as part of my job, I still find it exciting. The other thing I like about the job is the teamwork. The other members of the crew have become great friends of mine, and it's great fun working with them every day. Then, of course, there's the real joy of rescuing people in danger. I've saved lots of lives doing my work, and not many people can say that!

I have always wanted to be a scientist and when I left school I went to university to study biology. I had no idea that my degree could get me a job like this, though. I thought I would be working in a laboratory or a factory near home. I never imagined working at the North Pole! But here I am, and I'm having the time of my life. At university I got into adventurous sports like snowboarding, skiing and trekking. I went on long trekking trips with other students across Finland and Norway. Now these things are part of my everyday work as an Arctic researcher. My work involves tracking polar bears and other species to discover more about their lives. That means going on long journeys on snowmobiles or skis. Sometimes, when the weather is bad and we have to stay in our hut for days or weeks at a time, the job gets a bit dull. There are also a lot of reports and paperwork to write, and that's not a lot of fun. Mostly, though, I enjoy my work.
