Gran Who Ran Around the World: 5 Years, 3 Packs of Wolves and 53 Pairs of Shoes
Most grandmas break out in a sweat after running for the bus. Can you imagine your granny running 50 kilometres a day, camping in the Alaskan wilderness or fighting off wolves in Siberia? Well, grandma and widow Rosie Swale-Pope did exactly those things during a five-year run around the globe.
1 You are going to read an article about an amazing journey made by a woman from Wales. Scan the article to find this information about Rosie's journey.

This amazing story began back in 2003. Rosie was in her late fifties. She wanted to raise money for Kitezh Community for Orphan Children in Russia and increase awareness of cancer after the death of her husband, but how? Some people her age might have organised a charity jumble sale. Not Rosie! She decided to run around the world to raise funds for Russian orphans and for research into cancer. So, on 2 October 2003, she set off from her home town in Wales. It was her 57th birthday.
Rosie wanted to take the cheapest route around the world. Her aim was to spend no more than £3000 per year because she didn't want to waste her sponsors' money on expensive boat voyages. That meant keeping on land as much as possible. Her route took her through 12 countries including Germany, Poland, Russia, Greenland, Iceland and Canada, running all the way. In total she ran an amazing 32 000 kilometres. It's not surprising that she wore out 53 pairs of shoes on route.
But holes in her footwear were not the worst of her problems. Rosie ran through some of the most difficult and dangerous places on earth.
In the wilds of Siberia she was followed by packs of wolves. In Iceland she slipped on ice and broke several bones. In Alaska, where temperatures fell to minus 60 degrees Celsius, she nearly lost her toes because of frostbite in her feet.
Such a journey would have been an incredible feat for anyone, let alone for a grandma. But then Rosie is not your average gran! When she was much younger she had sailed from England to Australia with her husband and daughter. Her second child was born on board the yacht during the voyage back. Rosie is certainly no stranger to adventure.
She may be adventurous, but Rosie didn't take foolish risks. She trained hard for her gruelling journey, regularly running 50 kilometres a day with a heavy pack on her back. Her preparation also included learning six different languages because she didn't expect to meet many English speakers in the remote places along her route. Indeed, her language skills certainly helped her out in a few emergencies, like the time she was hit by a bus in the middle of Siberia.
Despite all the difficulties, Rosie made it to England in the summer of 2008. She was a stone's throw from her home town when disaster struck. She began to feel terrible pain in her leg. At the nearest hospital, doctors told her she had a serious problem with her hip. She had to stop running and to have a rest. But Rosie was determined not to let her dream die. After a few days in a hospital, bed, she was on the road again. On 25 August 2008, the 62-year-old Rosie walked the last kilometres back home to complete her incredible, life affirming journey.
Rosie Swale-Pope raised more than £250 000 for a charity that supports orphaned children in Russia and for cancer charities.
