Healthy body, healthy mind

Imagine a classroom full of 11-year-old children. Some of the class are staring out of the window – they're miles away; others seem to have problems sitting still: shifting, standing, poking their neighbours, calling across the class – you name it, they're doing it. In fact, they're doing everything except listening to their teacher. Would it surprise you to learn that all of this could change merely by changing the diet of these pupils? Recent research into the effect of diet on children has shown that a junk food diet does not only make children overweight, but it also affects their behaviour.

In Britain, many children eat a diet of frozen, processed junk food: chicken nuggets, burgers and of course, chips. In fact, children eat so much junk food that many of them can't identify fresh food when they see it, as was pointed out in the recent eye-opening TV series on the state of school dinners. They've been brought up on a diet of processed junk food, so how could they possibly know what real potatoes, asparagus or celery look like, or even taste like? In fact, the only things they have no problem recognising are different fast foods and fast food restaurant logos.

Jonathan Smiley, a primary school teacher concerned about his pupils' diet, has decided that education is key if students are going to change their bad eating habits. He recently took his year five class on a school trip to a local farm. The point was to show the children where 'real' fruit and vegetables come from – the ground. 'The kids were given strawberries to try and most of them just looked at them in a very peculiar way. It's obvious they have never seen them before!' Smiley is now convinced that fresh food is not playing much of a role in children's lives either at school or at home.

This, of course, is very worrying as recent studies have found that the high sugar levels contained in processed food prevents children from concentrating for long periods in class. As a result, they misbehave and are not learning what they should be learning. It is also affecting the teachers and the parents, making their job a lot harder than it should be.

Smiley believes that convincing children will prove to be a very challenging job, but perhaps convincing their parents might be even harder. However, there is hope. In schools which have already switched to healthy school dinners the news is good. Teachers have noticed better behaviour from the pupils and a decrease in the use of asthma drugs. It just goes to show that a good diet is very important for both children's health and their behaviour. It remains to be seen if all school authorities and parents actually do something about the poor quality of their children's diets.
