A. Are you aged between 16 and 19 and studying at school or college full-time at the moment? Do you need to buy equipment? Are your finding the cost of travelling to lessons expensive? If so, you might be able to get help. There is a government scheme for young people just like you. Apply now and see if you qualify for a grant of up to £1200.

B. All children have to go to school ... or do they? In some countries parents are allowed to educate their children at home. In England, this is called Home Education or Education Otherwise. Some parents choose this for their children because they feel they want to take part in their child’s education. When parents choose to do this, they must be very organised and take their role as a teacher seriously. Children being home-educated must get used to having school rules at home.

C. The Teaching Agency in England is the organisation which helps people who’ve decided they want to become teachers. The Agency provides training called Initial Teacher Training (ITT) – the first professional training for people learning how to be a teacher. There are also professionals who can answer questions about teacher training, give advice about money for training and help to prepare new teachers for the classroom. The Agency can also help with different training options and information about teacher’s salaries.

D. Do you remember your very first day at school? How old were you? Four? Five, maybe? For many, the first day they spent at school was a scary and upsetting experience. Lots of small children cry and ask for their mums and dads. But primary school teachers, who teach children between 4 and 7 years old, are trained in how to cope with little children who are upset. Before long, most new pupils have forgotten their tears and are busy playing with their new classmates.

E. The advice teachers usually give their students is to start revising for exams weeks if not months before the exam itself. But new research shows that this might not be the best idea. Some researchers believe that if you revise a day or two before your exam, you may do better. They say the stress helps your brain and memory work better. Your teacher is unlikely to agree, though!

F. Ask three people what schools are for and you’ll get three different answers. One person will tell you schools are the places where children learn to read and write. Someone else may say schools are where children find out how to behave properly. Another view is that schools are where children begin to understand how to cooperate with others and become responsible members of society. The truth is, school is a mixture of all these things.

G. The London School of Russian Language and Literature in north-west London has bilingual students between the ages of 3 and 17 as well as adults. Students can study the Russian language, and Russian literature and history, up to A-Level standard – but only on Saturdays; that’s the only day the school is open. The school, started in 1988, has 20 highly-qualified Russian teachers. The school is also a cultural centre and there are children’s clubs and adult courses as well as regular lessons.
