Good morning and welcome to a Window on the World. As you can probably hear, I'm near the sea for today's program to talk about how surfing and a social conscience combine. Yes, you heard me right, surfing and a social conscience. In fact, I'm in Irun in the north of Spain to talk to Rafa Martinez, a keen surfer. Good morning, Rafa.

Rafa: Good morning, Sue. Come and sit down.

Sue: Rafa, you work in a surf shop, your hobby is surfing, and you've set up a non-governmental organization to help people learn to surf. Are you a little bit obsessed?

Rafa: Well, a little.

Sue: Rafa, please tell the listeners a bit about your organization.

Rafa: Okay. Well, four years ago, myself and these three guys here. Hi. Hi. set up Hands and Surf.

Sue: Why did you decide to set up an NGO?

Rafa: Well, because we traveled around the world surfing on some fantastic beaches, but we realized that the best surfing places were also some of the poorest parts of the planet.

Sue: Okay. And why call it Hands and Surf?

Rafa: I don't know. We like the name more in English. It's easier to understand for people in other countries too. It's called Hands because we want to give people a hand, a helping hand.

Sue: I see. Anyway, Hands and Surf teaches people how to surf.

Sue: Who do you teach?

Rafa: We teach people in other countries, poor people or people with problems.

Sue: Can you give us an example?

Rafa: Yes. For example, Peru.

Sue: And what kinds of problems do people have in Peru?

Rafa: Well, there was an earthquake there a few years ago, and lots of very poor people lost their houses. Their children had nothing to do, so we decided to teach them to surf. That was the beginning of Hands and Surf.

Sue: I see. So, you taught young children.

Rafa: And adults, about sixty families altogether.

Sue: To surf. But how does that help them?

Rafa: It distracts them from their problems. They feel happier about their lives when they're surfing.

Sue: But surfing is an expensive hobby. How can poor people do it?

Rafa: Ah, sorry, I forgot to say. We have a sponsor, a surfboard company called Pukas. They gave us the surfboards and my friends and I taught the children how to ride the waves. It was great fun and it helped them forget about the earthquake and their problems. They've still got the boards now.

Sue: Wow, that sounds very rewarding, Rafa.

Rafa: It is. And you know something, Sue, seeing those kids smile is something very special. I think I learned what happiness means in Peru.

Sue: So, surfing and helping other people are compatible.

Rafa: Definitely.

Sue: And do you have any free time activity that doesn't involve surfing?

Rafa: Oh, yes. I like reading, traveling, photography. I've got lots of hobbies.

Sue: Rafa, it's been a pleasure meeting you and hearing about Hands and Surf.

Rafa: It's no problem. Sue, do you know how to surf?

Sue: No.

Rafa: Well, come on, it's easy.
