Mike: Hello, Mike Davis here for Radio four.

Mike: Today is World Book Day, and we're visiting a secondary school in West London to see what sixteen-year-olds are reading these days. Here to explain it to us is their teacher, Jane Moppet.

Mike: Jane, what are your students reading? One of the classics, I suppose?

Jane: Well, in a way, our students are reading The Odyssey, the classic story of Odysseus, but instead of reading it as a conventional book, they're reading it in graphic novel format.

Mike: That's a kind of comic, isn't it?

Jane: No, a comic is much shorter. It's just an episode or small part of a longer storyline. A graphic novel has a complex and fully developed plot.

Mike: But they're just picture books, aren't they? They're not real books.

Jane: Well, they are different from conventional books. They do have pictures and the text is in speech bubbles. But they have a theme, sub-themes, fully developed characters.

Mike: Okay, but why aren't your students reading the conventional book?

Jane: For several reasons. Research shows that around ten percent of students can't form an image in their own mind with just words.

Mike: But aren't those students just a bit lazy?

Jane: Not at all. Visualization is a serious problem.

Mike: Visu- what?

Jane: Sorry. Visualization. That's what psychologists call it. It's when you can read the words but you can't produce the visual images that the words describe.

Mike: Hmm. Is that a problem?

Jane: It is, and it can put readers off conventional books permanently.

Mike: Really? So, is this a kind of experiment?

Jane: Exactly. We want all our pupils to enjoy reading, including the ones with visualization problems, reluctant readers, everyone, really. However, there are other problems that affect other readers.

Mike: What like?

Jane: Well, more and more students are called reluctant readers these days. But that's not because they're lazy, it's because they live in a visual society where most of the information they receive is visual.

Mike: And so they can't concentrate on a long book without images?

Jane: Well, they can but they need help. They need to understand the story first with visual support. Later, they can read it in a conventional book format.

Mike: So, are you saying that graphic novels can encourage reluctant readers to read conventional books?

Jane: Yes. But we also think that graphic novels can help everyone become a better reader. The students with visualization problems, reluctant readers, everyone, really.
