Disabled or super-abled.

Sport has always been about extending the potential of the human body, but scientists say that we will soon reach our natural limits.

Apparently, the fastest a man will ever be able to run one hundred meters without using illicit substances, is just two tenths of a second faster than the actual world record.

So, is there anything we can do to pursue the Olympic ideal faster, higher, stronger? Or is this the end of the story?

Some athletes believe that nutritional science can make a difference. However, unless the human heart gets bigger, it is improbable that anyone will ever be able to run a mile faster than three minutes.

So, miracle diets alone won't help us break through nature's barriers.

Fortunately, most people agree, doping is out of the question.

Could technological change then be the way forward?

We already use carbon fiber instead of wood to make tennis rackets. Swimsuits can be made of a fabric that imitates the skin of a shark, and footballers will soon have boots biomechanically modeled to their feet. All of these innovations improve performance.

But perhaps the most exciting prospect for sport is the combination of technology with our heart, muscles and skeleton.

This integration of technology and biology, bionics, already exists.

Athletes like Oscar Pistorius, who lost his biological legs in childhood, are pioneers among disabled people.

He competes against the able-bodied using carbon fiber prostheses.

Further technological advances, like using Bluetooth technology to control robotic arms and legs, means that there will be more and more athletes like him in the future.

Indeed, experts predict that by two thousand twenty, the name we use for people like Pistorius, will have changed from disabled to super-abled.

Nevertheless, not everyone agrees about the use of bionics in sport.

In fact, some critics are already calling this foul play, and claim that super athletes, like Pistorius, have an unfair advantage.

However, others say that the advance of technology in sport is irresistible.

Some experts even predict that we will all be using some form of bionic implant by the end of the century.

If they are right, it will make no sense to talk about unfair bionic advantages, because we will all be better, faster and stronger than ever before.
