The rhythm of peace.

Rap music with a message for peace may seem an unlikely combination. But then you might not have heard Emanuel Jal's music.

Jal sings in a mixture of Arabic, English and African languages. You don't need to understand the lyrics to enjoy his songs, but you do have to know a little about his story to fully understand the message in his music.

He has three best-selling albums, and his life is a success, but it wasn't always like that.

Jal is softly spoken, tall and slim with a happy smile. Looking at him, you would never guess what he's been through.

He was born in Sudan and was just seven when he had to join the army as a child soldier. Five years later, he walked over one thousand six hundred kilometers to escape from the army.

After what must have been a terrible journey, Emma McCune, an aid worker, rescued Jal and took him to neighboring Kenya.

Tragically, McCune died soon afterwards, and Jal was alone and homeless again.

Living on the streets as a teenager in Kenya, he became interested in music and realized it could give hope to people like him.

He began to organize gigs to raise money for former child soldiers. Then came a life-changing experience. He discovered rap.

His unique style of hip hop, combined with African beats, helped him get his message across and become a rising star on the world music scene.

It is interesting to compare Jal's brand of rap with some of the big American hip-hop stars. Like Jal, many of them have had difficult lives. They grew up in poverty and had to survive crime and violence. Unlike Jal, their songs have been criticized for their messages of violence, disrespect to women, and their me-me-me attitude of self-obsession.

Many people, including Jal, think that these rappers should change their tune. In contrast, his lyrics are thought-provoking, and his message is one of peace.

In his hit single War Child, Jal wraps: I'm a war child. I believe I've survived for a reason: to tell my story, to touch lives.

This is why he's a spokesman for the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers and the Control Arms campaign.

Jal has used music to create something positive out of what could have been a tragedy.
